Aquarium at Fort Fisher

Learn about local fish, fowl and habitats, see an albino alligator, climb along the adventure reef! This aquarium is located at Kure Beach, which is at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and getting there is just as much fun as being there. Take the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry (call 910-457-6942 or toll free at 1-800-BYFERRY for the ferry schedule). Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission: Adults: ages 13-61, $10.95

Battleship North Carolina

Explore the decks of a 728 foot warship that participated in every major Pacific naval offensive during World War II. This attraction is open every day of the year. A two hour self guided walking tour goes through crew quarters, galley, sick bay, engine room, pilot house, battery plotting rooms, a museum, and one of the 16-inch gun turrets. #1 Battleship Road

Fort Fisher Historic State Park

Remains of the largest earthwork fort of Civil War Confederacy, as well as a target for the heaviest naval bombardment of land fortifications in history. A reconstructed gun battery, remains of the fort, and a museum are open. At the renovated visitor center, there is a brief audio-visual overview of Fort Fisher. Walking tour available. Free admission. Open Tuesday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Holden Beach Fishing Pier

Ingram Planetarium

Magic Mountain

Magic Mountain provides a go-cart track, water slides, and mini-golf. With kid’s slides and an ice cream shop, this is a perfect place for everyone. Museum of Coastal Carolina

Enjoy coastal nature for the fun of it! The Museum has several new and renovated exhibits on display. Check out the shark jaws, ocean reef, and the live sea creatures in the touch tank. Identify your beach treasures at the area’s most extensive shell exhibit and see the short video about the life cycle of the loggerhead turtle filmed locally on the beach. North Carolina Maritime Museum (Southport)

Old Baldy Lighthouse

The oldest remaining lighthouse in NC is open for tours. A climb of about 100 steps and wooden ladder leads visitors to a glass enclosed room with views of the island, the sea, and the river. Open Monday-Saturday 9-5; Sunday 11-5. Admission $6 adult (13 and up), $3 youth (ages 3-12), 2 and under free. Lighthouse is accessible by ferry ride to the island. Summer Concerts

One of the best things about summer is taking any excuse to be outside! Every Sunday night, Holden Beach holds a free outdoor concert at the pavilion. Enjoy some of the best local beach music, rock and roll, oldies, and Mowtown around! The concerts start at 6:30pm at the Holden Beach Pavilion under the Holden Beach bridge. Admission is free, just bring a chair and get ready to dance all night long!
